Tackling pseudomonas infections with a water safety initiative

Abstract

Nurses were compelled to act after a rise in Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections, including an outbreak of the multi-drug resistant strain, at The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust's haemato-oncology unit. Inspired by a commitment to patient safety, a nurse-led team initiated a pioneering approach, introducing a unique water-safety training package. The success of this initiative, evidenced by a marked reduction in infections, has far-reaching implications for clinical care.
