Abstract

Internationally educated nurses have played a vital role in the NHS since its inception. However, data from workforce race equality reports suggests that employees from Black or minority ethnic backgrounds face higher rates of formal disciplinary actions than their White colleagues. Using the case study of an internationally educated nurse, this article explores some of the challenges that nurses from global majority backgrounds face in terms of cultural nuances and competency expectations. It highlights the importance of restorative clinical supervision and the role of professional nurse advocates to improve psychological safety, restore confidence and create development plans when performance is in question.
