Abstract

Diabetic foot disease can drastically alter a patient's life and is linked to high burdens on society, including costs, mortality and morbidity. In 2022, the Vascular Society Diabetic Foot Specialist Interest Group (VSDFSIG), in association with the James Lind Alliance (JLA), published the key research priorities for preventing and managing diabetic foot disease. Multidisciplinary healthcare professionals, along with patients and carers, identified the top priorities using a Delphi consensus methodology. These include prevention of diabetic foot ulcers, treatments for infected diabetic foot ulcers, improving diabetic foot ulcer healing and access to specialist services. The VSDFSIG are now leading in the development research strategies to generate impactful evidence in these key areas and urge podiatrists, who are key members of the diabetic foot team, to be involved through leading, developing and participating in the developing research programmes.
